I.M. Slack

10 great movies you can rent this weekend - don't rent just anything pick up one of these should-be classics. Make some popcorn, pop one of these tapes in the VCR and be thankful you read I'm Slack :^>
  1. Fargo 1996 rated R
    • Joel and Ethan Coen's masterful look at a bizare true story of interconnected crimes in the Midwest. Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, and William H. Macy are brilliant. McDormand portrays pregnant Sheriff Marge Gundersonon on the trail of two killers hired by Jerry Lundegaard ( Macy )to kidnap his wife so he can pocket some of the ransom paid by his father-in-law to cover some other hinted at crimes. A+

  2. Blade Runner 1982 rated R
    • Harrison Ford plays Deckard, a futuristic detective tracking down renegade Replicants in this Film-Noir/Sci-Fi masterpiece by Ridley Scott. The video contains additional footage edited out of the theatrical release because the violence was deemed to graphic for '82. This film features fine performances from an outstanding cast including: Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, and Joanna Cassidy. If it's been more than a decade since you've seen it or if you missed it altogether, rent it tonight.

  3. Amadeus 1984 rated PG
    • An ancient, lucid, and quite insane Antonio Salieri, brilliantly played by F. Murray Abraham, recounts the amazing life of his mortal enemy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( Tom Hulce ). Directed by Milos Forman, Amadeus is more entertaining than you can possibly believe considering it's a movie about jealousy and tragedy. We were doing the Mozart laugh for months after watching this movie. We especially liked Jeffery Jones as Emperor Joseph II - Too Many Notes! Highly recommended.

  4. Unforgiven 1992 rated R
    • Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this modern western classic. Eastwood plays retired gunslinger William Munny who agrees to take one last job to kill two cowboys who cut up a prostitute for laughing at one of the cowboy's manhood. Gene Hackman wins the Oscar for his portrayal of sadistic Sheriff Little Bill Daggett. Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris also turn in Oscar caliber performances. This movie dispels the fantasy mythos of Western movies and gives us a gritty look at how the west really was.

  5. Miller's Crossing 1990 rated R
    • The Second Coen Brothers' movie to make the list, but unlike Fargo you might have missed this one. Launched to critical acclaim, but to disappointing box office receipts, Miller's Crossing is a complete and total celluloid masterpiece. Tom Reagan ( Gabriel Byrne ), is the right hand man to a Prohibition-era crime boss (Albert Finney), and gets caught up is a twisted series of events. The Coen's trademark black humor is in full effect and Coen movie regulars John Turturro and Steve Buscemi add their special blend of brilliance and insanity. My personal favorite - What's the Rumpus?

  6. Blazing Saddles 1979 rated R
    • Mel Brooks' Western Comedy about a crooked politician ( Harvey Korman ) that appoints a black sheriff ( Cleavon Little ) in hopes of ruining a town full of Johnson's so the land can be used for the railroad. Madeline Kahn stills kills us with her "I'm Tired" song, Gene Wilder and Slim Pickens also deliver the comedic goods. Mel Brooks best movie, IMHO.

  7. Double Indemnity 1944 not rated
    • Fred MacMurray (of My Three Sons fame ) plays Walter Neff An insurance agent that falls for Phyllis Dietrichson ( Barbara Stanwyck ) and allows her to talk him into a murderous insurance fraud scheme. Edward G. Robinson plays Barton Keyes, the insurance investigator in Neff's firm. Film-Noir at its very best.

  8. Cool Hand Luke 1967 rated R
    • Conformity and Rebellion are the main themes of this classic Paul Neman Prison film. Newman's performance drives this movie and is without a doubt one of his best. George Kennedy won an Oscar for his performance as Dragline the cast also includes then unknown actors Dennis Hopper, and Harry Dean Stanton. The film is marked by the now infamous egg eating scene and the wardens line "What we got here is a failure to communicate".

  9. This Is Spinal Tap 1984 not rated
    • Rob Reiner's mock rockumentory classic about the ill fated come back tour of an aging British rock band. Spinal Tap - ( Michael McKean ) David St. Hubbins ( Christopher Guest ) Nigel Tufnel , ( Harry Shearer ) Derek Smalls, and ( Bruno Kirby ) Tommy Pischedda, are being chronicled by documentarian Marti DeBergi ( Reiner ). "The Worlds Loudest Band" are captured in all their goofy glory in this outrageous spoof.

  10. Fish Called Wanda 1988 rated PG
    • John Cleese wrote and stars in this hilarious, comedic masterpiece - but the film revolves around Wanda ( Jamie Lee Curtis ). Wanda and her ugly American boyfriend Otto ( brilliantly portrayed by Kevin Kline ) are in England to team up with George (Tom Georgeson ) and Ken ( Michael Palin ) to pull of a daring daylight diamond robbery. When George is arrested Wanda gets close to his Barrister Archie Leach ( Cleese ), and as they say, hilarity insues.
