This Months Featured Spors Article:
An Athlete
By Tamara
All through my childhood, I wanted to play sports. I think the reason was my father coached for several high school/semi-pro football teams. I remember going to practice with him and wishing I could play. The only problem was I am a girl.
I tried other sports - softball (I got hit by the ball more than I caught it), track (didn't have the stamina), basketball (never did learn how to do a lay-up), and tennis (hand eye coordination wasn't consistent). I was throughly disgusted trying to find something I could do competively, so I gave up.
After moving back to our home town, my husband starting playing golf with my father on weekends. I went with them sometimes and tried to play, and had no success. I didn't watch golf on TV like I do football (baseball bores me except for the playoffs & World Series; basketball, lately, just sucks), but after trying to play I started watching the PGA Tour, which ultimately lead to the LPGA.
It was little over a year ago I was watching the Ladies' Australian Masters and came to the realization that I could play golf. Seeing those women play a game as well as men made me want to play. Since that day, I have gone to the golf course every chance I get. I like it because you are competing more against yourself and the course than your opponent; the opportunity to be outside in a beautiful setting isn't half bad either :) With yourself being your own worst enemy, playing golf is hard and very frustrating.
And that's where I am now. I play really well some days (96 - best score ever) and really crappy others (120 - somewhere I don't like to be). I am better than double bogey golf and proud of it. Because of this civilized yet heartbreaking game, I have found that I too can be an athlete.
