The 2000 British Open

Steven Andrews

It seems fitting that in the year 2000 golf's oldest tournament returns to the original golf course in St. Andrews, Scotland for the 25th time. From July 20th-July 23rd the golfing world will be tuned in to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club's Open Championship where the best in the modern game will challenge the venerable old course.

The Old Course at St. Andrews itself plays to 6933 yards and a par of 72, has 112 bunkers, and the wind coming off the ocean can make it quite adventurous. If you try very hard you can still see the shepherds leading their flocks down the fairways in your minds eye. The infamous 17th, the Road Hole, is the most acclaimed hole on the course as much for its distinctive look as its difficult play.

After last months U.S. Open you would have to say that Tiger Woods is the heavy favorite. He seems to be head and shoulders above anyone else in the game at this point. Maybe this is Colin's year to win it. Nah. 49 of the top 50 ranked players in the world are scheduled to compete so whoever wins; he will have to beat the best. In addition to Tiger I am looking for good performances from Darren Clarke, Hal Sutton, Jesper Parnavick, and Lee Westwood. One can only imagine what this years finish will be like considering the disastrous 18th by Jean Van de Velde last year.

The real winners this year will be the millions of golf fans across the world who will get a chance to see the best players try and tame the original golf course. Only in golf can fans get a chance to watch an event at a venue that is as old as the sport itself - golf has been played on the links of St. Andrews for the past 600 years.
