Tiger Woods Grand Slam

Steven Andrews
When Tiger Woods walked away from the field in the '97 Masters, it was his first major and there was still speculation that he would fail to live up to the hype. He then worked on re-tooling his swing and struggled before edging Sergio for the PGA crown last year, it was close and I actually heard murmurs that Tiger still wasn't dominant.

I believe that the issue is now put to rest.

No matter how you look at it Tiger is the most dominant golfer since Jack, and the most dominant athlete since Michael Jordan.

Consider This:

  • With his record setting British Open Championship at St. Andrews on Sunday, at the age of 24, Woods becomes the youngest player to put together the career Grand Slam.

  • He's won the last two majors by a combined 23 shots, now has 21 PGA Tour victories and has won $17 million in PGA Tour prize money. He is the first golfer since '53 to hold the title of three majors at once.

  • Tiger's only the fifth golfer ever to win the career grand slam, he's finished in the top 10 in 20 of his last 23 starts, and his 15 shot win in the U.S. Open was the largest margin of victory ever in a major.

  • His average margin of victory is 6 shots, he is the youngest player to ever win four majors, his 19 under at the British Open is the lowest ever at St. Andrews. It took Tiger 93 events to win the grand slam, Jack 125.

Or What His Peers are saying:

  • Nick Faldo - "The guy is simply in a different league."

  • Ernie Els - "We're seeing the next great player"

  • Tom Watson - "He plays golf supernaturally"

  • Mark Calcavecchia - "We're looking at the next Nicklaus"

Tiger has now won more tournaments than any other PGA tour member under 50, and he appears to be driven to continue to perform at a high level for years to come. When asked if he is as good as he can get, Woods said: "No, no, no no. Definitely not."

If you want my advice, enjoy the Tiger Woods show. It's rare that we get to witness true greatness in sport and there is little doubt that true greatness is exactly what Tiger has provided.
