One of the advantages of having been an Army brat was I got to move around quite a bit. I would love to go back to some of the places of my youth, one of them being Germany. I was a little girl while living there but I remember how much I loved being there.
We were living in Logansport, Indiana when my father was told he had to go to Germany. Logansport was a small town, and I remember liking it okay. I was more excited about flying than I was about going overseas. Within a couple of months, my mother packed up all our stuff (by herself I might add), had my sister and me in tow, and we were on our way to Germany.
We started in Zwiebruken (I think that's how you spell it) then later moved to Darmstadt. I started first grade on the Army base in Zwiebruken. School was fun, I guess. I remember our school's field trips were very fun. One time we went away for a couple of days. My mom was one of the parents that chaperoned all our trips (so my little sister had to come too), but I had fun anyway. I can't remember why we went on the trip, but it doesn't matter. After moving back the states, I never went on a field trip like that at any school in Georgia.
Wow, what a place! It snowed every winter, it was just warm enough during spring and summer, and fall was spectacular. The apartment complex we lived in was directly in front of a forest. My family would walk through them picking blackberries so mom could make cobbler. During the winter at night, you could look out our window and see deer or rabbits scampering around. Christmas always seemed extra special.
