I've discovered the long-lasting power of kiwi.
I bought some kiwis about two months ago but was too lazy to peel off its skin to eat it. So, I let it veg in the fridge, forgetting its existence.
With most produce, that's a scary thing. Raspberries you've got to eat within a couple of days of purchasing or white and then black hideous molds start growing on it. Spinach leaves after four days or so start to turn grossly shaggy-these brown liquids start to collect at the bottom of its plastic bag.
Kiwis for me are primarily for salads. They taste good with spinach leaves, red lettuce, red onions, croutons, capers and Paul Newman's Balsamic Vinaigrette (profits of which go to charitable purposes). It's a nice alternative to the tomato.
But, of course, being a lazy bum I'm too lazy to make a bowl of salad even though I like to eat it. First, you've got to wash the spinach or red lettuce, which is a pain. Then you got to peal off the onion's outer skin and chop it up, which is also another hassle. The caper jar and vinaigrette bottle must also be twisted open, which is physically enervating and consequently may ache my shoulder and hand muscles for a week or so. And then you got to put all the ingredients in a salad bowl, a salad bowl (in addition to the fork) you have to wash at the end of the meal. It's just soooooo time-consuming.
Well, I finally decided to make a salad since I was getting sick of my candy bar and doughnut diet.
(Something is so seriously wrong when preparing food takes longer than eating it, but that's just my personal opinion.)
I then wondered why, why can I still use these kiwis, which are at least two months old. Not only do they still look pretty good, they also taste good after two month of their purchase. Perhaps those kiwis aren't even two months old but at least several months old since they come all the way from faraway New Zealand. Who knows how long they've been stored in a big New Zealand kiwi-silo?
Who'd thought kiwis had such magical power to stay fresh for such a long time? Well, now we both know. As they say, "knowledge is power".
